Book Review: "Girl Online" - Zoe Suggs/Zoella

Book Review: "Girl Online" - Zoe Suggs/Zoella

Hi there! :)

So, as one of my New Year’s Resolutions I'm determined to get back into reading again, as I used to be quite the bookworm!

I'm a fan of all literary genres - romance, fantasy, crime, fiction, non-fiction, biographies...however in order to ease myself back into reading I've decided to stick to mostly fictitious Young Adult (YA) type novels, for the time-being. Normally aimed at teenagers, YA plots are usually pretty straight-forward and deal with typical stories of teenage angst, family-life, friendships and self-discovery. The great thing about starting out with YA books is that they are usually pretty short (around 200 pages) which means they shouldn't take up too much of your free time BUT you still gain a sense of accomplishment with each one you finish! :)

As an added bonus for me personally, I find it is a great way to bond with my younger, teenage sister (and even better that I can "borrow" her books instead of having to wait for the ONLY copy to be returned to the library in order for me to get my hands on it! fml)

Recently, I managed to snag a copy of the best-selling novel "Girl Online" by fellow blogger and YouTube sensation Zoe Suggs, aka Zoella, who my sister claims is "like, OMG, SO cool!!" ;)

Now, some of you may be aware that there has been some controversy surrounding the release of this particular novel. The media had a hay-day when it was revealed that Zoella did NOT in fact write the book by herself but had the help of a "ghost-writer", i.e. someone who writes all or part of a book but who agrees not to take credit for doing so. This kind of scandal is nothing new, in fact many famous authors have used ghost-writers in the past,  and let's be honest, Zoella started out as a YouTube star and has no real experience in writing, so did anyone really expect her to do it alone? Other celebrities, e.g. Katie Price, also use ghost-writers and don't seem to face as much backlash from fans, so is it really that big a deal?!

We could debate the ethics of employing ghost-writers all day, but instead I'd like to give my view on the novel itself, and what it was like to read.

Summary:

The plot centres on a teenage girl, Penny, who lives in Brighton with her parents and her older brother. She was recently in a car accident and as a result has started to suffer from anxiety attacks. After a series of unfortunate events at her local school, her attacks become much worse and she just wants to escape from it all. And as luck would have it, her family decide to take a trip to New York, and she even gets to take her best friend along with her on this exciting adventure! While there, she meets and falls head-over-heels for a young man, Noah, who is also struggling with his own demons and trying to escape from reality. He too falls head-over-heels in love with her, but will what they are both running from eventually catch up with them? Can they live happily ever-after or are they just living on borrowed time together?

Analysis:

While it may not be on par with Romeo and Juliet, the love-story is endearing. It definitely draws on the whole idea of a "summer fling" (albeit not in the summer. Is there such thing as a "winter fling?") and the excitement and innocence that comes with being in love for the first time. Penny is your typical awkward teenager just trying to fit in, and Noah is the mysterious artistic type, who also happens to have an AWESOME surname! ;) (is it just me, or is Flynn becoming more and more popular for both guys names and surnames?! Ever since Disney’s “Tangled” featured Flynn Rider, I keep seeing the name popping up everywhere!).

The story is written from Penny’s point of view, and each chapter starts with an entry to her personal blog, where she uses her online persona “Girl Online” (hence the title of the book!). Through this we see how the internet can provide a medium for emotional release, as Penny blogs about her problems /fears and consequently helps others to confront their own. However we also witness the darker side of the internet, as Penny is subjected to cyber-bullying on various occasions, which aggravates her anxiety issues even further.

It’s interesting to see someone tackle an issue which is becoming more and more prevalent in our society, and even more so when you learn that Zoella is drawing upon her own personal experiences. I think in many ways, while this book may not win a Pulitzer, it still contains a lot of important messages that all of us can learn from and is helping to tear down stigma surrounding certain issues, e.g. social anxiety.

The story also focuses in part on the life of Penny’s best friend, Elliot, whose parents refuse to accept his homosexuality, believing it to be a phase he will eventually grow out of and forcing archaic notions of masculinity upon him as a result. While I praise the author for bringing this issue to light, I can’t help but feel that she herself relied on stereotypical representations in order to bring this character to life, e.g. he is obsessed with fashion and can be somewhat overly dramatic. However, as I mentioned above, this is nothing major if this story helps others to gain more understanding of the issues homosexuals (both male and female) face in their day to day lives and leads to greater acceptance and tolerability in our society as a result.

The Verdict:

Overall, while the book was somewhat predictable and soppy in parts, I enjoyed reading it. I liked how both Penny and Noah were both equally tormented by things that had happened in their pasts, so that neither one was too reliant on the other to “save” them, portraying a somewhat healthy relationship to younger audiences for a change (unlike, let’s see, "Twilight" for example!). I found the characters to be interesting and the challenges they faced to be reflective of the challenges many people face at that age. I’d probably rate this book 3/5, but don’t worry if you don’t intend to read it – I’m sure there’ll be a movie adaptation sometime in the near future! :P

Movie Review: "Annie"

Hi there!

So, as previously mentioned I LOVE musical theatre, and one of my all-time favourites HAS to be Annie.

I remember watching the original as a young girl, the storyline was so captivating (I mean who wouldn't wanna be adopted by rich-person and get to live in a mansion and have everything your heart desired?!) and the music was equally as infectious, with classics such as "Tomorrow", "Maybe" & "It's a Hard Knock Life" to name a few.

And who can forget the adorable shaggy dog Sandy?! Your heart just melts when you think of his waggy tail :)

So, recently, a new more "modern" take on the story was released in cinemas and naturally I had to check this out (along with the rest of my family - it was a nice bonding session, even though my mother INSISTED on singing along at the top of her lungs in an attempt to mortify us all! haha).

There are some slight differences in the plot, for example Daddy Warbucks (played by Jamie Foxx) is no longer a millionaire, bachelor tycoon who lives in a a massive mansion and has an abundance of servants at his beck-and-call, but instead a millionaire, bachelor entrepeneur who owns one of the largest cell-phone networks in America and who lives in a smart-penthouse, i.e. a luxurious penthouse which is hooked up with the latest technology so that anything you need is at your fingertips. And this particular business man wants to be the next mayor of New York, so he is looking for something to get voters on his side.

When along comes Annie...except, not as we know her!

Another change in the plot is that Annie is no longer a scrappy, little white girl with freckles and red, curly hair but instead she is a scrappy, little black girl with dark, brown almost afro-like curls. She is still as feisty and lovable as ever, and boy can she SING!! :)

In a slight change of setting, Annie no longer hails from an orphanage but is a foster kid who lives with 4 other girls with Ms. Hannigan, who is just as despicable and unhinged as ever thanks to a brilliant performance by Cameron Diaz.

I'm not gonna go into any more details about the plot, in case you haven't seen the original (deprived childhood much?! lol jk but seriously, you NEED to sort this out if you haven't already!) but I will say that overall I was impressed with how they managed to adapt the plot to suit the 21st Century and for fellow fans you can rest assured that it remained as faithful to the original as possible. PHEW!

Now onto my favourite part...the MUSIC

The film tried to create an edgier take on the music, incorporating a more "urban" vibe by sampling tracks such as Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life" (which as we all know samples the original number from the original film) as well as some original music sung by Jamie Foxx (who we all know has collaborated with artists such as Kanye West in the past - remember "Goldigger"?).

Some of the lyrcis have been adapted to fit the plot better as well. For example, in the children's rendition of "It's a Hard Knock Life", the original version goes "No one cares for you, a snitch, when you're in an orphanage...", however the new version goes "No one cares for you, a kid, when you're a home-stay kid..." - subtle differences but necessary for plot development I suppose!

Similarly, Diaz's rendition of "Little Girls" has almost been completely altered, in order to fit her new back story (SPOILER ALERT! She's a washed up singer, who likes to drown her sorrows as a result). They keep the original chorus in order to make the song recognisable, however the verses are completely new.

Finally, there are some new  songs to look forward to, e.g. "Opportunity", however sadly some of the original songs have been cut, including my personal favourite "We Got Annie" :( BOO!

All-in-all, if I had to choose between the two versions, I'd choose the original, but that could just be the nostalgia talking! ;)

Let's Get Personal ;)

Hi there!

So following on from my intro to this blog, I wanted to tell you all a little more about me and my story so far :)

I was born on 22nd Dec. 1991, one month earlier than expected (an early Christmas present some might say!), in the West of Ireland.

I moved from a built-up residental area to the countryside when I was around 7yrs old, so I'm definitely more of a "culchie", i.e. a country-girl, at heart.

I come from a BIG family (7 kids in total, of which I'm No. 3) which means I'm used to things being loud and crowded and usually feel uncomfortable when I'm home alone with no-one to talk to :/

I love to sing and dance, which is why I love both watching and taking part in musical theatre, so I'm sure to be discussing some of my favourite songs, plays and movie adaptations here!

I'm also a HUGE language enthusiast/nerd! :P I studied Applied Languages in college and can speak both French and Spanish. I hope to both improve my ability in these languages and hopefully learn some new ones too! It's slightly addictive, like Pokémon, one is never enough - gotta catch 'em all! ;) haha

I'm in a long-term relationship (4yrs last October) with a great guy, and we moved in together last Sept. Most of our relationship has been long-distance due to both our studies, so this is something new and exciting for us both! :S but I'm glad to say that so far, so good! :)

Finally, for those of you who may not know, my name is Irish/Gaelic and means "little rose ", which is where I got the inspiration for the tag-line of my blog, i.e. seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses.

I think the rose is a great representation of who I am, in that I am quite a petite individual, or as some might say "delicate", but I have a feisty/darker side, so watch out for those thorns! ;)

Intro...

Hi there!

My name is Róisín (pronounced: row-sheen) and welcome to my blog! :)

I'm a recent graduate, in my mid-20's, currently residing in Dublin, Ireland.

In case you haven't already guessed, this is where I'll be recording my life and how I see the world, i.e. my reality. Which is why my blog is so aptly named Roisin's Reality ;)

I've never done something like this before, so I ask you to please be patient with me! :S
I welcome any positive feedback, and look forward to growing and learning through this, together :)

Of course, no good blog would be complete without the use of social media, so please feel free to like my Facebook Page too! .

Finally, I'd like to thank my older sister, who in many ways has been the inspiration behind starting this blog and who has given me so much advice and encouragement, that I've finally taken the plunge! You can check out her blog here: Rare Opal :)
